Perfumes that smell of smoke & incense
Smoke is one of the most evocative scents that exists. It can mean a campfire on a winter evening, an old leather jacket, a church, or a temple. In perfume, smoke usually comes from notes like birch tar, incense (olibanum), and smoky woods – and in the hands of an independent perfume house, it can become anything from a soft glow to something almost soot-like.
Here, we have collected perfumes that truly smell like smoke: not just a hint in the base, but scents where smoke carries the story. Some lean towards leather and tobacco, others closer to ritual and temples, and a few surprise with rose or burnt Japanese wood. Try two or three side by side. The difference between the raw smoke of birch tar and the dry, resinous tone of incense only becomes clear when you smell them on your skin.
The Scents
Rook – Rook Perfumes
Birch tar opens dark and feels like real smoke, with tobacco in the top and incense and guaiac wood in the base – the scent of a smoky vintage leather jacket.
The Black Knight – Francesca Bianchi
A military camp at dusk: campfire smoke in the top, smoky wood notes and leather in the heart, and soot-like smoke surrounding a dry vetiver in the base.
Tenger’s Son – Maison de L'Asie
Built around the contrast between glowing campfires and chilly night air. Smoky birch tar and resinous labdanum meet a dark, slightly salty caviar accord and guaiac wood.
Gunsmoke Saloon – Tulpa Club
Smoke and antique timber corridors in the top, burnt sage and raw pine in the heart, and aged sweet whiskey in the base – a saloon where the air hums with smoke.
Rosanostra – Spiritica
Black rose interwoven with a smoky sensation of burnt paper, atop a ritual base of smoky olibanum and damp earth.
Yakisugi Wood – Flâner
Inspired by the Japanese tradition of burning the surface of cypress wood. Blue cypress and teak wood land in a smoky base of vetiver, tobacco, and olibanum.
Dark Imagination – Discothèque
A dark rose scent where birch tar and leather provide a dry, almost soot-like depth, and smoke in the base makes the scent linger for a long time.
The Dark Side – Francesca Bianchi
Oriental warmth with a distinct incense core – more of an inner glow than a church. Honey, iris, and violet soften it, while styrax and vanilla add depth.
